Lo Mein is a popular Chinese dish made with stir-fried noodles, vegetables, and a savory sauce. This recipe is quick and easy to make at home, and you can customize it with your favorite veggies and protein. The dish has a deliciously rich flavor thanks to the soy sauce and other seasonings.




✅ Ingredients

For the Lo Mein:

  • 8 oz (225g) lo mein noodles (or any other Chinese egg noodles)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup bell peppers, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 cup cabbage, shredded
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/2 cup snow peas
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (or mushroom soy sauce for a vegetarian version)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili paste (optional for spice)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 1 tablespoon water to thicken)

For Garnish (Optional):

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, chopped

📝 Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Noodles:

  1. Cook the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions.
  2. Drain the noodles and set them aside, tossing them with a little vegetable oil to prevent sticking.

2️⃣ Prepare the Sauce:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar, and chili paste.
  2. In another small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry for thickening the sauce.

3️⃣ Stir-Fry the Vegetables:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add garlic and ginger and sauté for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  3. Add the bell peppers, carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, broccoli, and snow peas to the pan. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 4-5 minutes until they are tender-crisp.

4️⃣ Combine Noodles and Sauce:

  1. Add the cooked noodles to the pan with the vegetables.
  2. Pour the prepared sauce over the noodles and toss everything together, ensuring the noodles are well-coated in the sauce.
  3. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.

5️⃣ Serve and Garnish:

  1. Serve the Lo Mein in bowls, and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.
